Things to do in the area
Walk the Saxon Way long-distance coastal walk – and enjoy spectacular views out to sea on this ancient path.
Look for smugglers’ caves – smugglers used the bay for centuries, there is even a story of an unnamed parish clerk said to have stored ropes for hauling smuggled goods up the cliffs from the beach in his church tower!
Visit the coastguard station at Langdon Battery at the western end of St Margaret’s Bay – this monitors the Straits of Dover. A station was set up in St Margaret’s in 1737 by Capt Philemon Phillips, RN.
Compare the old photos in the pub with the bay now – in 1918, the last bomb to be dropped in England in WWI fell on St Margaret’s. In WWII the bay was bombed for target practice, and every building along the bay except for the pub was razed to the ground.
